====== Coordinates ======

Coordinates are required for every repeater entry. They are critical for enabling proximity-based features such as **“near me” searches**, mapping, and app functionalities. These tools are most effective when the coordinates reflect the **actual location** of the repeater.

==== Coordinate Format ====
  * Coordinates must be provided in **decimal format** and should consist only of numeric values (e.g., `-122.4194`, `37.7749`).  
  * **Cardinal directions** (e.g., N, S, E, W) should not be included.  
  * Proper use of the negative sign is necessary for western and southern hemispheres.  
  * Coordinate converters are available whenever coordinates are requested to assist with formatting.

==== Privacy and Alternative Coordinates ====
For repeater owners or trustees concerned about security, alternative or **truncated coordinates** can be used to protect the exact location of the repeater.  
- In such cases, RepeaterBook often centers the coordinates on the nearest city or a general area.  
- This ensures functionality for mapping and searches while preserving location privacy.

==== Notations for Exact Coordinates ====
  * If the exact coordinates of a repeater are known, this is indicated with an **“exact coordinates are known”** notation on the repeater's details page.  
  * A similar flag is included in the RepeaterBook API for developers.

==== GPS Data Accuracy ====
It’s important to note that the **exact location** of many repeaters may not be known or displayed in RepeaterBook. While alternative coordinates maintain privacy, they may not accurately reflect the repeater's true placement.
